My ipod quit working?

I have the 3rd generation ipod nano (the small square one) and i've had it for 3 years. This morning it was working fine and i put new songs on it but then i went and used it on my ipod dock, but it was slow and freezing up. I took it off and it took a couple tries to get it to shut off, but now it wont turn on even if i plug it into the computer and the wall.. i tried pressing the middle button and the menu button at the same time too but that didn't work. is it time for an upgrade? i know that it could've just given out.
